BA, GDipMus (Opera Perf), MMusSt, CertT, AMusA, MACE
Professional Qualifications and Practice
Gordon Harris studied singing with several leading voice teachers,
including Peter Martin (former Head of Vocal Studies, Qld Conservatorium
of Music), Professor Janet Delpratt (former Head of Vocal Studies at Qld
Conservatorium of Music and internationally renowned Voice Teacher),
Donald Smith (Internationally renowned operatic tenor) and James
Christiansen (formerly Chorus Master of Opera Qld and Voice Teacher). He
completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Qld with a major in
Music, and a Master of Music Studies (focussing on Opera Performance and
Vocal Pedagogy) at Qld Conservatorium Griffith University. He also
completed research of the Male Adolescent Singing Voice, and has since
developed a busy teaching practice which includes many adolescents
undergoing voice change. He currently spends a part of each week as
Vocal Teacher at Brisbane Grammar School.
To inform his teaching and remain abreast of current developments in
Vocal Pedagogy, Gordon maintains close links with a number of professional
bodies, including ANATS (Australian National Association of Teachers of
Singing). He has presented papers at conferences, regularly leads
workshops on voice, is an experienced conductor of choral and
instrumental ensembles and regularly adjudicates at vocal competitions.
Performance Experience
Gordon began his musical career as a brass player, but during his teen
years, he also developed and explored a keen interest in singing. His
first stage role was Karl Franz in "The Student Prince", followed by his
first operatic role, Paolino in "The Secret Marriage". From then on,
many opportunities came for roles in stage productions and solo
engagements in oratorio and concerts.
Among his many accomplishments, Gordon appeared regularly, over a
fifteen year period, in productions with Opera Queensland and was a
member, for a time, of The Ten Tenors. He has also appeared as a guest
artist with the intimate opera ensemble, Operatif!.
Nowadays, Gordon considers performing opportunities to be secondary to
teaching. He spends most of his time passing on his experience and
nurturing the talents of his students. However, he still enjoys
performing opportunities when they present themselves. A personal goal
for 2010 is to record a CD of favourite songs and arias for his family.
